I too have tried this and the results are the same, that is, when you crop the 400mm image to match the extended reach of the EZ, the image quality is equal. If I'm missing some technical aspects of these comparisons, please let me know.Īre we talking intelligent zoom or EZ zoom? The above is based on some experimentation i did in the past with a Sony 828 and a Sony HX1 and repeated on the FZ1000. You may benefit in other ways with raw depending upon what you are doing with the pictures, but you gain more in basic dimensions with the i.zoom setting in non-raw shooting. Raw has a max zoom of 400 (no intelligent zoom) compared to the 800 /1120 /1600 above. If you take the same picture as before now using the raw setting and crop down to show the same view area, you will be at about 490x325 pixels. Now, the intelligent zoom compared to Raw is apples to oranges. The size will be the same for all three pictures - eg, the area seen with the S setting at 980圆50 will be the same area on the M setting picture at 980圆50 size, and again will be the same area on the L picture cropped to 980圆50. Then crop each picture down to a the same small view (Same final view, not the amount of cropping to get there). Take identical subject pictures at the L setting (max zoom will be 800), the M setting (max zoom will be the 1120 or so), and the S setting (max zoom will be 1600). Set your camera on a solid surface or use a tripod. If you are going to do any cropping, i.zoom at L, M, and S settings turn out to be the same. Lots of fine detail, you'd never think they were shot with a form of digital zoom.Īs far as the intelligent zoom function (i.zoom), you are comparing apples to apples to apples regarding the L, M, S settings. By the way Tom I had a look at those hummingbirds and they look great. The EOZ will only take you to 800mm, so to zoom out further you need the izoom, which at a picture size of 10mp will take you to 1120mm, as Tom pointed out already. I combine the extra optical zoom (EOZ) with the izoom. Maybe Panasonic will work in a downloadable fix for the FZ1000. Not being able to use intelligent zoom in RAW is a suprise. I agree is work really good I like using it Tombarry975 edited this topic 100 months ago. My Flickr account is public, and you will find some FZ1000 shots made using Intelligent Zoom there - look for the first shots of hummingbirds you see, and click on them and then open the EXIF for details. I was able to expand the 400mm maximum zoom setting to 1120mm. I made the JPEGs setting to 10MP resolution and the extended zoom indicator was displayed in the EVF. The amount of zoom extension you get depends on how much resolution you use for your JPEGs (It won't work with RAW).

Following the instructions in the expanded PDF instruction book, I set the Intelligent Zoom feature. Someone on another photo-sharing site mentioned that the FZ1000's Intelligent Zoom feature is different and far better than the image-destroying "digital zoom," which loses significant quality with each incremental extension of zoom.
